Sat Jan 04 02:36:32 UTC 2025: **Indian Railways Accelerates Nationwide Rollout of Indigenous Train Protection System ‘Kavach’**

HYDERABAD, January 4, 2025 – Indian Railways is rapidly expanding the deployment of Kavach, its indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across the nation. The system, which significantly enhances railway safety, will initially utilize its radio communication backbone, ‘MComm’, before the full ground-based infrastructure is complete.

Officials revealed that while the optimal performance of Kavach requires both locomotive and ground-based equipment, the direct loco-to-loco communication feature of MComm provides a substantial safety improvement in the interim. This innovative solution, designed a decade ago by a railway engineer, avoids reliance on potentially obsolete 2G or 4G LTE technologies.

The development of Kavach was partly spurred by a 2012 recommendation from a high-level safety committee to adopt a radio-based train control system, similar to the European ETCS Level-2. MComm’s design, characterized by its scalability, minimal hardware requirements, and independence from rapidly changing technologies, proved crucial.

Successful trials of Kavach, including one instance where it prevented a large freight train from passing a red signal, demonstrated its effectiveness. Although initial rollout faced delays due to factors such as antenna bandwidth issues, the system is now being implemented on a mission mode.

The Railways has tendered for Kavach installation on 10,000 locomotives, with three firms—Medha, Kernex, and HBL—and two more, GG Tronics and QFTL, now shortlisted for the project. Furthermore, the rollout of ground-based Kavach equipment is underway on 15,000 route-kilometres, including key routes like Chennai-Mumbai and Chennai-Delhi, in addition to existing installations. This marks a significant step towards enhancing safety and efficiency across India’s vast railway network.
