**Los Angeles, CA** – The first round of NBA All-Star voting has revealed a changing of the guard, with longtime stars LeBron James and Stephen Curry falling short of the top spots at their respective positions. While still strong contenders, both players find themselves battling for starting positions, a significant shift from their previous dominance.
Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo leads all vote-getters with 1.7 million votes, continuing his reign from last year. In the West, Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic (1.4 million votes) and Phoenix Suns’ Kevin Durant (1.27 million votes) currently hold the top two spots in the frontcourt, pushing LeBron James (1.17 million votes) to third. While James maintains a comfortable lead over Anthony Davis and Victor Wembanyama for the final starting spot, the ranking marks a departure from his past dominance.
Similarly, Stephen Curry faces a challenge in the West backcourt. He trails Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (1.05 million votes) and Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Dončić (870,071 votes). Dončić’s current injury could open the door for Curry to reclaim a starting position in his home All-Star game in San Francisco, however.
The East backcourt presents a tight race, with LaMelo Ball leading narrowly, followed by a close battle between Donovan Mitchell and Damian Lillard for the second starting spot.
The initial voting results represent only 50% of the final tally, with media and player votes yet to be factored in. Voting continues until January 20th, with updates on January 9th and 16th. Starters will be announced on January 23rd, followed by the announcement of reserves a week later. This year’s voting clearly suggests a new generation of NBA stars is emerging, challenging the established dominance of past greats.
