**New Delhi, January 3, 2025** – Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a rapid expansion of solar and wind energy in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Chairing the seventh meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA), Mr. Shah stressed the importance of achieving 100% renewable energy generation through solar panels and windmills. He also directed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to implement the ‘PM Surya Ghar’ scheme, installing solar panels in every household across both island groups.

The meeting reviewed the progress of ongoing development projects, including improvements in digital and air connectivity, and port development. A comprehensive presentation was given by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the island administrations detailing these initiatives. Mr. Shah highlighted the government’s commitment to developing infrastructure and tourism in the islands, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach involving collaboration between central ministries across sectors like tourism and trade. The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Lieutenant-Governors of the respective island groups.
