Sat Jan 04 04:48:44 UTC 2025: ## China Sees Surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases, Raising Concerns

**Beijing/New Delhi** – A surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China is raising concerns about a potential public health crisis, echoing anxieties from the COVID-19 pandemic. While China hasn’t officially declared an epidemic, social media reports and data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate a significant increase in acute respiratory infections, including HMPV, across the country.

The increase in HMPV cases, particularly among children under 14 in northern provinces, has prompted speculation about a possible spread to neighboring countries like India. However, Indian health officials have stated there are no reported outbreaks within the country and advise only standard respiratory infection precautions.

HMPV, a common respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms, is typically more prevalent during winter months. While symptoms are similar to the common cold or influenza, and generally resolve within a few days, it can lead to more serious lower respiratory infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration (NCDPA) has acknowledged a substantial rise in respiratory infections between December 16 and 22, implementing a new monitoring system to track and manage pneumonia cases. Although the situation hasn’t been officially classified as critical, the NCDPA’s response highlights the seriousness of the increase.

Experts recommend standard precautions such as wearing masks in crowded areas and avoiding close contact to mitigate the risk of HMPV and other respiratory viruses. While HMPV is not new—outbreaks have occurred internationally in the past—its current surge in China warrants close monitoring.
