Sat Jan 04 14:22:55 UTC 2025: ## China Faces New Health Crisis Amidst Unconfirmed HMPV Outbreak

**Beijing/New Delhi, January 4, 2025** – Nearly five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, China is reportedly grappling with a new health emergency stemming from a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections. While Chinese authorities have allegedly declared a health emergency, the World Health Organization (WHO) has yet to officially confirm the situation. Neighboring countries are urging caution, and Hong Kong has also reported cases.

HMPV is a respiratory virus affecting people of all ages, though children under five and the elderly are most vulnerable. While not a new virus—first identified in 2001—its increased prevalence in China has raised concerns. Symptoms mimic the common cold, including runny nose, sore throat, cough, and wheezing, but can lead to bronchitis and pneumonia in those with weakened immune systems, particularly those with pre-existing conditions like COVID-19. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, direct contact, and contaminated surfaces.

Indian health officials are closely monitoring the situation, advising preventative measures but stressing there’s no immediate cause for alarm. Kerala’s Health Minister has urged the elderly and pregnant women to wear masks in public places.

Although HMPV and the COVID-19 virus are distinct, they share similar symptoms and modes of transmission, highlighting the importance of preventative measures such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and mask-wearing. Currently, no specific antiviral treatments or vaccines exist for HMPV.
