**Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh:** Five cases have been filed against protestors in Pithampur, Dhar district, who demonstrated against the planned incineration of 337 tonnes of toxic waste from the Bhopal gas tragedy. The protests, which took place on Friday, led to the imposition of prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), banning gatherings of 50 or more people near the Ramky Enviro company where the incineration is scheduled.
According to Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Singh, the cases, filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including those related to rioting, unlawful assembly, and obstruction, target both named individuals and unidentified protestors. The protests involved a large crowd of approximately 500-600 people marching on the Ramky Enviro premises, and two individuals attempted self-immolation. Fortunately, they were prevented from doing so by bystanders and received medical attention.
Following the protests, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav held a high-level meeting. He stated that the state government followed Supreme Court and High Court orders in transporting the waste and will seek further court direction before proceeding with the incineration, especially if public safety concerns persist. The Chief Minister emphasized that the transportation adhered to safety protocols. Normalcy has reportedly been restored in Pithampur as of Saturday morning.
