**Beijing, China** – China is experiencing a surge in respiratory illnesses, primarily driven by human metapneumovirus (HMPV), influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19, leading to overcrowded hospitals and sparking concerns of another major health crisis. While images and videos circulating on social media depict overwhelmed medical facilities, the Chinese government has downplayed the situation, attributing the increase to typical winter patterns.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated on Friday that respiratory infections are common during winter months, assuring both citizens and international travelers that it is safe to visit China. She claimed that the current outbreak is less severe and widespread than in previous years, urging individuals to consult guidelines from the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration.
Despite the government’s reassurances, neighboring countries such as Indonesia, India, and Japan have issued advisories cautioning their citizens about the situation in China and recommending necessary precautions. HMPV, a respiratory virus first identified in 2001, causes flu-like symptoms including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. Similar to COVID-19, it spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. Currently, there is no vaccine available for HMPV.
