Fri Jan 03 03:22:51 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Choked by Dense Fog, Air Quality Plummets as Cold Wave Hits
**NEW DELHI** – A dense fog blanketed Delhi on Friday morning, plunging the national capital into a cold wave with temperatures dipping to a chilling 9.6 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The already poor air quality has further deteriorated to “very poor,” exacerbating concerns for public health.
The return of the annual fog and smog season, worsened this year by increased pollution, has led to a rise in road accidents across the country. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.
To ensure safe driving in foggy conditions, the IMD recommends:
* **Drive slowly:** Reduced visibility necessitates slower speeds to allow for increased reaction and braking time. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
* **Use low-beam headlights and fog lamps:** High beams reduce visibility in fog. Utilize fog lamps if available, and rear fog lamps to alert following vehicles.
* **Avoid hazard lights while driving:** Hazard lights should only be used when stationary. Using them while driving can confuse other drivers.
* **Park safely if visibility drops:** If visibility becomes dangerously low, pull over to a safe location off the road and activate parking and hazard lights.
* **Rely on lane markers:** In conditions where stopping isn’t possible, follow lane markers to maintain course. On single-lane roads, stay to the left.
The combination of dense fog and poor air quality has prompted health warnings, and authorities are urging residents to take precautions to protect their health.
