Fri Jan 03 06:08:21 UTC 2025: ## Udupi Cochin Shipyard’s Remarkable Rise: From Insolvency to Global Orders

**Mangalore, January 3, 2025** – Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), a subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has experienced a dramatic turnaround, transforming from an insolvent shipyard to a major player in the global shipbuilding industry. Acquired by CSL in 2020, UCSL has secured significant international orders, boosting its order book to over ₹500 crore.

UCSL’s success story began with the revitalization of the previously struggling Tebma Shipyard in Malpe, Udupi district. After initial projects like constructing fishing boats and ferries, UCSL secured crucial contracts for building tugboats for Ocean Sparkle Limited (an Adani Group company) and Polestar Maritime Limited. These projects, delivered ahead of schedule, established UCSL’s credibility.

A landmark deal with Wilson ASA, Norway’s largest short-sea shipowner, in 2023 propelled UCSL into the international market. The order for six 3,800 TDW dry cargo vessels, followed by a subsequent order for eight 6,300 TDW vessels, solidified UCSL’s position. The first of the 3,800 TDW vessels was launched on December 16th, with delivery scheduled for February 2025. These eco-friendly vessels, designed by Conoship International, Netherlands, are equipped for future wind-assisted propulsion.

UCSL’s success is attributed to strong leadership, robust infrastructure improvements, and a focus on skilled workforce development. The shipyard prioritizes local sourcing, procuring almost all inputs, including marine-grade steel, from Mangaluru and Udupi, supporting local MSMEs and providing training opportunities. Expansion plans are underway to further increase production and employment opportunities in the region.

Cochin Shipyard Limited Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S. Nair highlighted CSL’s long-standing relationship with Norway’s shipping industry as a key factor in securing these international orders. Both CSL and UCSL are working towards India’s goal of becoming a top 10 shipbuilding nation by 2047. The remarkable turnaround of UCSL serves as a testament to the potential of Indian shipbuilding and its ability to compete on the global stage.
