Thu Jan 02 17:04:05 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Orders Probe into Smart City Project Amidst Quality Concerns

**Bengaluru, January 2, 2025** – The Karnataka Urban Development Minister, Byrathi Suresh, has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the quality of Smart City projects implemented across the state, following allegations of unsatisfactory work. The investigation, to be conducted by an independent agency and completed within three months, will cover six cities: Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru. Bengaluru is excluded from this specific inquiry.

The ₹6,415.51 crore project, implemented across seven cities, has faced criticism regarding the allocation and execution of funds. Minister Suresh expressed concern over the significant portion of funds (36%) spent on roads, underground drainage, and parks, arguing that a greater focus should have been placed on social infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and libraries. He noted complaints received from public representatives in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Shivamogga regarding subpar work.

The Minister highlighted the project’s funding allocation: 2% each for education and health, 8% each for energy and information technology, 9% for lakes, 5% each for markets and sports, 8% for transport, and 18% for other basic infrastructure. He emphasized that remaining funds should be used to construct international-standard smart schools equipped with modern learning tools, prioritizing the education of underprivileged children. The Smart City project is scheduled to conclude by March 2025. The inquiry will involve a committee of subject matter experts and representatives from the Indian Institute of Science and universities in the respective districts.
