**Madrid, Spain** – Spain recorded a significant increase in irregular migration in 2024, with 63,970 migrants and refugees arriving via irregular routes, a 12% rise compared to 2023. This surge, according to the Spanish interior ministry, is largely driven by a 19% increase in arrivals via the perilous Atlantic route to the Canary Islands, where 46,843 people landed. This contrasts with a 40% overall decrease in irregular crossings into the European Union reported by Frontex for the period January to November 2024.
The Atlantic route, originating in countries like Senegal, Morocco, Mauritania, and The Gambia, remains the deadliest in the world. The recent capsizing of a boat off the coast of Morocco, resulting in at least 69 deaths, highlights the inherent dangers. NGO Caminando Fronteras reported a staggering 10,457 migrant deaths or disappearances at sea in 2024 while attempting to reach Spain – a 50% increase compared to the previous year and the highest number since 2007. The NGO attributes this tragic rise to the use of unsafe vessels, hazardous sea conditions, and insufficient rescue efforts.
Migrant aid groups, such as Walking Borders, have criticized the lack of adequate rescue operations and the criminalization of migrants, accusing European governments of prioritizing immigration control over the right to life. The escalating death toll underscores the urgent need for increased international cooperation and improved search and rescue capabilities to address this humanitarian crisis. Factors contributing to the migration include conflict in the Sahel region, unemployment, and the impact of climate change on agricultural communities.
