Thu Jan 02 21:10:04 UTC 2025: ## Terrorist Attack in New Orleans Leaves 14 Dead, Dozens Injured

**New Orleans, LA** – A terrorist attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Day left 14 people dead and at least 35 injured after a truck plowed into a crowd celebrating on Bourbon Street. The FBI has identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar of Texas, who was killed after engaging with law enforcement. An ISIS flag was found attached to the truck, and Jabbar had reportedly posted pro-ISIS messages on Facebook before the attack.

The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m., hours before the scheduled Allstate Sugar Bowl. The game was postponed but has since been rescheduled for Thursday. Authorities have confirmed Jabbar acted alone, though the investigation continues. Investigators are examining three phones and two laptops recovered from an Airbnb Jabbar rented. A fire at the Airbnb is also under investigation.

The FBI detonated two suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found in the French Quarter, and are sweeping the area for further threats. Four individuals seen on video opening one of the coolers containing an IED are being sought for questioning, but are not considered suspects. Authorities have stated there is no connection between this attack and a recent vehicle explosion in Las Vegas.

Several victims have been identified, including Tiger Bech, a former athlete at St. Thomas More Catholic High School, Nicole Perez, a manager at Kimmy’s Deli, Nikyra Dedeaux, and Matthew Tenedorio, an employee at the Caesars Superdome and Smoothie King Center. Others injured include students from various universities across the southern United States. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office is working to identify the remaining victims.

The city has reopened Bourbon Street with increased security measures in place for the Sugar Bowl. Increased security is also present at the Caesars Superdome. The RTA (Regional Transit Authority) has adjusted streetcar and bus services due to road closures. The New Orleans Police Department, along with federal authorities, are actively investigating the incident and asking anyone with information to come forward. The United Way of Southeast Louisiana and the Greater New Orleans Foundation have established funds to support victims and their families. A blood drive is scheduled for Thursday.
