**New Orleans, LA –** A coordinated terror attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year’s Day left 14 dead and 35 injured. The attack, carried out by 42-year-old Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, has been declared an act of terrorism by the FBI. Jabbar, who died in the attack, drove a rented pickup truck onto the sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians and firing into the crowd with an assault rifle and handgun. He also planted two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in coolers near the intersection of Bourbon and Orleans Streets; both were rendered safe.
FBI agents, working with local law enforcement, recovered bomb-making materials at Jabbar’s Houston, Texas residence. Surveillance footage shows Jabbar placing the IEDs and subsequently changing clothes. He had posted several videos online before the attack, proclaiming support for ISIS and mentioning his prior involvement with the group. An ISIS flag was found in his truck.
Authorities believe Jabbar acted alone. While the FBI is investigating potential foreign or domestic contacts, they have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. Over 400 tips have been received, and investigators are analyzing Jabbar’s digital devices and interviewing witnesses. The FBI released surveillance photos of Jabbar and one of the IEDs.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced that Bourbon Street has reopened to the public, allowing the Sugar Bowl game to proceed as scheduled. Sixteen people remain hospitalized, with eight in intensive care. The investigation is ongoing, but authorities have stated that the death toll is unlikely to increase. The FBI has clarified that there is no apparent connection between the New Orleans attack and a separate incident involving a Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas, although both vehicles were rented via the Turo app.
