**Las Vegas, NV –** A decorated Green Beret, identified as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, died by suicide in a self-inflicted gunshot wound before a fireworks explosion inside a rented Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on January 1st, 2025. The incident, initially raising concerns of a potential attack, has been ruled a suicide by the Clark County coroner.

While the explosion caused minor injuries to seven individuals and minimal damage to the hotel, the blast was powerful enough to raise concerns. Investigators from the FBI, ATF, and local law enforcement are still determining a motive. Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that Livelsberger, despite his military background, appeared to have used a crude explosive device, with the blast largely contained within the sturdy Cybertruck.

Authorities found a handgun at Livelsberger’s feet, another firearm, fireworks, personal documents, and an iPhone inside the vehicle. Both firearms were legally purchased. Interviews revealed possible marital discord shortly before the event. Livelsberger, who had recently returned from a deployment in Germany, had a distinguished military career including deployments to Afghanistan, Ukraine, and other locations. He received numerous awards, including five Bronze Stars.

The Tesla was rented in Denver and tracked across several states before arriving in Las Vegas. Investigators used charging station records to confirm Livelsberger was the sole occupant. A search of his Colorado Springs home revealed no overt signs of threat. Though the incident occurred near the Trump hotel and involved a Tesla, authorities have not yet established a definitive link to any ideology or political motivation.

This incident follows another New Year’s Day tragedy: a terrorist attack in New Orleans where a truck plowed into a crowd, resulting in at least 14 deaths. While both Livelsberger and the perpetrator of the New Orleans attack, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, had ties to Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), investigators emphasize no connection has been found between the two incidents. Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that the Las Vegas explosion was caused by fireworks and/or a bomb, unrelated to the vehicle’s functionality. The investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
