COIMBATORE, INDIA (January 3, 2025) – A significant LPG tanker accident on Coimbatore’s Avinashi Road old flyover caused a partial city shutdown early Friday morning. The 18-tonne tanker, transporting LPG from Kochi, Kerala to a Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) plant, detached from its truck while navigating the flyover’s roundabout at approximately 3:15 a.m.

The incident resulted in a minor gas leak, prompting a swift response from fire and rescue services. Authorities immediately cordoned off the area, halting traffic flow through the accident spot. As a precautionary measure, Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati declared a holiday for 37 schools within a 500-meter radius of the accident.

Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar confirmed that the gas leak has been contained. A recovery vehicle from the Indian Oil Corporation is en route from Tiruchi, and the possibility of transferring the LPG to smaller tankers is being assessed. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is also expected to arrive on site. The driver alerted emergency services immediately upon the incident.
