Fri Jan 03 01:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Rohit Sharma’s Boxing Day Test Possibly His Last, Say Gavaskar, Shastri, and Manjrekar
**Sydney, Australia:** Indian cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and Sanjay Manjrekar have speculated that the Boxing Day Test might have been Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in the longest format of the game. The Indian captain opted to rest himself for the fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney. Jasprit Bumrah, who led India to victory in the Perth Test, captained the side in Rohit’s absence.
Sharma, 37, managed only 31 runs in five innings across three Tests in the series. Gavaskar suggested that unless India qualifies for the World Test Championship final, the Melbourne Test earlier in the series would be Sharma’s last. He added that selectors would likely prioritize players who could contribute to the 2027 WTC cycle, starting with the England series.
Shastri, commenting during the toss presentation, noted Bumrah’s announcement of Sharma’s absence and his observation that Shubman Gill’s inclusion would strengthen the team. He interpreted this as a sign that Sharma was struggling both in terms of runs and mental state. Shastri believes Sharma may announce his retirement after this series, particularly given the upcoming domestic season and the emergence of young talent. He lauded Sharma’s brave decision to sit out the crucial Sydney Test.
Manjrekar praised Sharma’s decision as “typical Rohit,” calling it a brave move made for the team’s benefit although he found the lack of transparency surrounding the decision unusual.
India trails the series 1-2 and needs a win in Sydney to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and keep their WTC final hopes alive. A loss would end their chances of competing in the final. Their next Test series is scheduled for June.
