Wed Jan 01 19:00:00 UTC 2025: **White Sox Acquire Lefty Tyler Gilbert from Phillies in Minor League Swap**

**Chicago, IL – January 1, 2025** – The Chicago White Sox bolstered their pitching staff today, acquiring left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for right-hander Aaron Combs. Gilbert, 31, was designated for assignment by the Phillies before the holidays. To make room for Gilbert on their 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment.

Gilbert, a former sixth-round pick of the Phillies, made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021, famously throwing a no-hitter in his first career start. While his rookie season was impressive (3.15 ERA, 135 ERA+), his subsequent performance dipped. He spent time with the Cincinnati Reds organization before returning to Philadelphia. His most recent stint with the Phillies saw him post a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 big league innings and a 2.25 ERA in 40 innings at Triple-A.

The White Sox see Gilbert as a potential addition to their starting rotation, which is currently unsettled beyond Jonathan Cannon, Bryse Wilson, and Drew Thorpe. If he doesn’t crack the starting lineup, he’ll likely provide valuable left-handed relief depth.

In return, the Phillies received Combs, a 23-year-old right-hander drafted by the White Sox in the eighth round of the 2024 draft. Despite limited professional experience, Combs impressed with a 39.4% strikeout rate in his brief stint at Single-A. The Phillies see him as a potential prospect with upside. The trade marks an active start to the off-season for both teams.
