Wed Jan 01 12:22:27 UTC 2025: ## Ukraine Halts Russian Gas Transit to Europe

**Kyiv, Ukraine (January 1, 2025):** Ukraine has ceased the transit of Russian natural gas to European countries, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The move, confirmed by Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko, comes after the expiration of a pre-war transit agreement and is cited as a measure of national security.

Mr. Galushchenko stated that the halt is a “historic event,” predicting financial losses for Russia and aligning with Europe’s existing plan to phase out Russian gas imports. Russia’s Gazprom confirmed the interruption, blaming Ukraine’s refusal to extend the transit deal.

Despite the ongoing war, Russian gas had continued to flow through Ukrainian pipelines to Europe since the invasion, generating revenue for both Russia and Ukraine. However, Russia previously cut off most gas supplies through other pipelines, citing payment disputes and leading to an energy crisis in Europe.

While Russia supplied nearly 40% of the EU’s pipeline gas before the war, that figure has dwindled to approximately 8% currently. The Ukrainian transit route primarily served Austria and Slovakia, which have been actively diversifying their gas sources. Austria’s OMV supply was already halted in November due to a separate contractual dispute. Slovakia has secured alternative gas supplies from Azerbaijan and the U.S.

Europe has been working to eliminate its reliance on Russian gas by 2027, viewing Russia’s previous actions as energy blackmail. The cessation of transit through Ukraine is another step in that process, though it may cause short-term supply disruptions for some European nations. The long-term impact on European energy markets remains to be seen.
