**KALPETTA, January 1, 2025** – A land survey is underway in Wayanad district, Kerala, to assess the value of land designated for the resettlement of families affected by recent landslides in the Mundakkai-Chooralmala regions. Ten teams of officials from various departments are conducting the five-day survey across Elston and Nedumbala estates.
The survey aims to determine suitable areas for the construction of townships to rehabilitate the displaced families. While areas deemed unsuitable for construction will be excluded, plantation activities will be permitted on other parts of the land. Following the survey, construction of the townships will commence.
Resettlement will provide families with varying land allocations based on location: five cents per family in Elston Estate and ten cents in Nedumbala Estate. Importantly, land ownership will remain with the affected families, preventing government control. The government plans to explore options for productive land use, such as collective farming, to prevent the re-forestation of disaster-affected areas.
