**New Orleans, LA (January 2, 2025)** – A horrific attack marred New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Wednesday morning. A white Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by identified suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Texas, plowed into a crowd of revelers, killing at least 15 and injuring over 35.
The FBI confirmed that an ISIS flag was found inside the vehicle and that Jabbar was fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with police. Two homemade bombs were also discovered and disarmed. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the attack as intentional and stated that Jabbar appeared “hellbent on creating carnage.” Two officers were wounded but are in stable condition.
The FBI is investigating potential links to terrorist organizations and whether Jabbar acted alone. Agent Alethea Duncan stated that they do not believe he was solely responsible.
The attack, which occurred around 3:15 am local time, prompted immediate responses. President Joe Biden condemned the violence, while President-elect Donald Trump controversially linked the incident to illegal immigration, despite the suspect being an American citizen.
The incident prompted a 24-hour delay of the Sugar Bowl college football game, scheduled for later that day. The heavily-policed French Quarter, a popular tourist destination, was hosting numerous New Year’s events, including LGBTQ parties. Witness accounts describe chaotic scenes of gunfire and fleeing crowds amidst the carnage.
The New Orleans attack follows a similar car-ramming attack in Magdeburg, Germany, just 10 days prior. The increased security measures in place for New Year’s celebrations, including 300 extra officers, were unable to prevent this tragedy. The investigation is ongoing.
