Thu Jan 02 00:18:01 UTC 2025: ## Mexican Paralympian’s Unwavering Spirit: From Mountain Biking Champion to Winter Games Star

**Cancun, Mexico –** Arly Velasquez’s journey to becoming a four-time Paralympian is a testament to resilience and the unwavering power of passion. A former junior national mountain biking champion from Cancun, his promising career was tragically cut short by a back-breaking accident in 2001. Seven years later, on a seemingly unremarkable New Year’s Day in Banff, Canada, his life took an unexpected turn.

Witnessing skiers on the slopes, Velasquez, inspired by a past encounter with Mexico’s only previous Winter Paralympian, impulsively booked a last-minute mono-ski lesson. Despite frigid -22°C temperatures and blizzard conditions, he took to the slopes, reigniting a competitive fire dormant for years. This transformative experience led him to switch to mono-skiing and pursue a career in Para alpine skiing.

Velasquez’s path wasn’t easy. He sold his possessions, relocated to Utah, and endured years of intense training, suffering numerous falls and injuries. He even experienced a near-career-ending crash in Sochi 2014, requiring back surgery and a medically-induced coma. Yet, his love for the mountains and the freedom it provided propelled him forward.

His dedication culminated in participation in four Winter Paralympic Games (Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014, PyeongChang 2018, and Beijing 2022), making him the Mexican athlete with the most Winter Paralympic appearances. His eleventh-place finish in the Super G at Sochi 2014 remains his best Paralympic result to date. A recent second-place finish in the Super G at the Open National Championships further solidified his standing among the world’s top 11 mono-skiers.

Velasquez, now 36, proudly represents Mexico, often wearing a sombrero at the Opening Ceremonies and serving as his country’s flag bearer. He sees his impact extending beyond athletic achievement, recognizing the power of his story to inspire others. While contemplating retirement, his passion for the sport continues to drive him, and he aims to make his remaining competitive years count. His journey serves as an inspirational example of perseverance, the transformative power of unexpected opportunities, and the enduring connection between a man and his mountains.
