**New Orleans, LA** – A terrorist attack in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2025, left at least 15 people dead and dozens injured. The attacker, identified by the FBI as 42-year-old US citizen Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a former Army veteran and Texas resident, drove a white Ford F-150 pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers at approximately 3:15 am (local time).
Jabbar, described by authorities as having been “hellbent on carnage,” was armed and reportedly had an ISIS flag inside his vehicle. Two homemade bombs were also found and subsequently deactivated by authorities. He was killed in a shootout with police, two of whom sustained injuries but are expected to recover.
The FBI is investigating Jabbar’s potential links to terrorist organizations and is actively pursuing leads to determine if accomplices were involved. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry confirmed a manhunt is underway, stating, “We’re hunting some bad people down.” Initial reports placed the death toll at 10, but the number was later revised to 15 by the New Orleans coroner’s office.
The attack occurred in the densely populated French Quarter, leaving a scene described by witnesses as a “war zone.” The incident prompted the postponement of the Sugar Bowl college football game, originally scheduled for the following day. President Joe Biden issued a statement condemning the attack and vowing that the government “will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.” President-elect Donald Trump issued a statement linking the incident to illegal immigration before the suspect’s identity was confirmed.
The attack has shocked the city, a major tourist destination, and raised concerns about national security. The FBI and local law enforcement are continuing their investigation.
