**Chennai, January 2, 2025** – Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss strongly condemned the arrest of Pasumai Thaayagam president Sowmiya Anbumani and other PMK women’s wing members on Thursday. The activists were arrested for attempting to protest near Valluvar Kottam in Chennai, demanding justice for the survivor in the recent Anna University sexual assault case and improved women’s safety in Tamil Nadu. Police had denied permission for the demonstration.
Ramadoss criticized the police action, stating there was no justification for the arrests and accusing the government of stifling dissent. He argued that a stronger police presence at Anna University, rather than at the protest site, might have prevented the assault. He further demanded the resignation of the DMK government if it cannot ensure women’s safety, citing a purported rise in crimes against women under their rule. Ramadoss urged the government to thoroughly investigate the assault case and ensure the perpetrators face maximum punishment.
