Tue Dec 31 13:55:27 UTC 2024: ## Manipur: Kuki-Zo Groups Threaten Highway Blockade After Security Forces Crackdown on Women Protesters

**Kangpokpi, Manipur –** Tensions escalated sharply in Saibol, Kangpokpi district of Manipur, after security forces allegedly used force against Kuki-Zo women protesting the occupation of their community bunkers. Kuki-Zo civil society groups reported widespread chaos, claiming security personnel deployed tear gas and physically assaulted several women, some of whom were injured and required medical attention.

The injured women were transported to a hospital two hours away, while others received first aid in nearby villages. Eyewitness accounts describe women being manhandled, pushed, and dragged.

In response, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) of Sadar Hills issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate withdrawal of central security forces from Saibol by 4 pm on December 31st. Should the government fail to comply, CoTU has threatened to impose an indefinite economic blockade on National Highway 2, a vital transportation route for the region.

“We will not stand idly by as our people are oppressed and abused,” stated Kaiminlen Sitlhou from CoTU, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the community’s resolve. The threat of a highway blockade carries significant economic ramifications for the region. The alleged actions of the security forces have sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. The government faces a rapidly approaching deadline to de-escalate the crisis.
