**United Nations, New York –** Former US President Jimmy Carter, the longest-lived US president in history, passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100, the UN announced Sunday. Secretary-General António Guterres expressed profound sadness at the loss, highlighting Carter’s enduring legacy as a peacemaker and humanitarian.

Carter, a Democratic icon who served one term (1977-1981), achieved significant international acclaim. His accomplishments included the landmark Camp David Accords, brokering peace between Egypt and Israel, and the SALT II Treaty with the Soviet Union, aimed at limiting nuclear proliferation. He also oversaw the Panama Canal Treaties, returning control of the waterway to Panama.

Following his presidency, Carter remained a prominent global figure, focusing on conflict resolution, election monitoring, human rights advocacy, and disease eradication through the Carter Center. His dedication to these causes earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He co-founded The Elders group with Nelson Mandela to further promote peace and human rights.

President Joe Biden lauded Carter as an “extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,” a sentiment echoed by the UN Secretary-General who praised Carter’s “solidarity with the vulnerable, his abiding grace, and his unrelenting faith in the common good and our common humanity.” He is survived by his four children, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Rosalynn in November 2023. The UN extended its deepest condolences to the Carter family and the people of the United States.
