**Chennai, January 1, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has cancelled a global tender for the procurement of smart meters, citing excessively high costs quoted by Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL). The tender, part of the central government’s revamped distribution sector scheme, was floated last August and comprised four packages covering the installation of millions of smart meters across the state.
AESL, the lowest bidder for one package encompassing eight districts including Chennai, was reportedly deemed too expensive. TANGEDCO cancelled all four packages on December 27th, 2024. A retendering process is expected.
This decision comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Gautam Adani and the Adani Group, following US indictments alleging a bribery scheme involving USD 250 million in payments to Indian officials. While Adani Energy Solutions has denied the allegations, the timing of the tender cancellation is noteworthy.
