**New Delhi, January 1, 2025** – A landmark initiative providing free access to a vast library of scholarly research has launched in India today. The government’s “One Nation One Subscription” (ONOS) program grants 18 million students across all government-funded higher education institutions, including prestigious IITs, access to at least 30 high-impact international academic journals.
The program, approved by the Union Cabinet in November 2024, allocates ₹6,000 crore (approximately $727 million USD) over three years (2025-2027). Access is facilitated through a centralized, user-friendly digital portal managed by the Department of Higher Education and coordinated by INFLIBNET, an autonomous inter-university centre of the UGC. The initiative encompasses over 6,300 institutions, benefiting students, faculty, and researchers.
The ONOS program provides access to nearly 13,000 e-journals from 30 major international publishers. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) will monitor usage and the publication output of Indian authors within the program. This ambitious initiative aims to significantly enhance research capabilities and opportunities for higher education across India.
