**Mumbai, January 1, 2025** – The Indian Navy is set to significantly bolster its combat capabilities with the commissioning of three indigenously built warships and a submarine on January 15th. The ceremony, to be held at the naval dockyard in Mumbai, will see the induction of the guided-missile destroyer *Surat*, the stealth frigate *Nilgiri*, and the submarine *Vagsheer*.
All three platforms, constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), are equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors. The *Nilgiri*, the first of seven frigates under Project 17A, boasts advanced stealth features. The *Surat*, a Project 15B destroyer, represents a significant upgrade from its predecessors. Both warships feature accommodations for women officers and sailors, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to gender inclusion.
*Vagsheer*, the sixth Scorpene-class submarine under Project 75, is hailed as one of the world’s most silent and versatile diesel-electric submarines. Its capabilities include anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and special operations.
The Navy emphasized the significance of this event, highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in defence production and its leading role in global defence manufacturing. The vessels have undergone rigorous trials, ensuring their full operational readiness upon commissioning. The commissioning is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime strength and underscores the nation’s commitment to building a robust and self-sufficient defence ecosystem.
