**Ahmedabad, January 1, 2025** – A 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck Kutch district in Gujarat on Wednesday morning, according to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). The tremor, recorded at 10:24 am, had its epicenter 23 kilometers north-northeast of Bhachau. Authorities reported no casualties or property damage.
This is the latest in a series of seismic activities in the region. Last month alone, four tremors exceeding a magnitude of 3.0 were recorded, including a 3.2 magnitude quake three days prior to Wednesday’s event, also near Bhachau. A stronger 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit the district on December 23rd, and another 3.2 magnitude quake on December 7th. A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck Kutch on November 18th, and a 4.2 magnitude quake hit Patan in north Gujarat on November 15th.
Gujarat is known for its high earthquake risk. The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) reports nine major earthquakes in the past two centuries. The devastating 2001 Kutch earthquake, the third largest and second most destructive in India in the last two centuries, serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability. That earthquake resulted in nearly 13,800 deaths and over 167,000 injuries.
