Puducherry, January 1, 2025 – Rakesh Aggarwal’s tenure as Director of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) concluded on December 31st, 2024, following a year-long extension that sparked controversy. The extension, granted by the Union Health Ministry, had been met with protests from faculty and staff who argued it violated the JIPMER Act of 2008. The Act stipulates a five-year term or until the age of 65, whichever comes first.
Following Dr. Aggarwal’s departure, Gautam Roy, the senior-most faculty member, has been appointed as interim Director until a permanent replacement is found. A Jipmer press release confirmed both appointments.
