Tue Dec 31 15:57:33 UTC 2024: ## Coimbatore Businesses Push for Dedicated Metro Line to Airport

**COIMBATORE, December 31, 2024** – Representatives from Coimbatore’s trade and industry organizations are advocating for a new metro line connecting Saravanampatti and Coimbatore International Airport to support the city’s burgeoning IT sector. The proposal, presented to M.A. Siddique, Chairman and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited, cites the rapid growth of Coimbatore’s IT industry as the primary justification.

With an estimated two crore square feet of IT space either completed or under development, and an anticipated doubling of the IT workforce (currently nearing two lakh), the need for improved transport infrastructure is deemed critical. J. Sathish, Director of Kongu Global Forum, urged the Coimbatore Corporation to include this 15-20 km metro line in its Comprehensive Mobility Plan.

The organizations also emphasized the need for a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority, given Coimbatore’s growing metropolitan status encompassing over 1,500 square kilometers. The proposed metro line aims to serve as a crucial link for the city’s expanding “IT Corridor.”
