**Jaipur, Rajasthan –** A three-year-old girl, Chetna, died after being trapped in a 170-foot deep borewell in Rajasthan’s Kotputli-Behror district for ten days. Rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted a prolonged and challenging operation, hampered by rocky terrain and inclement weather. Despite their efforts, Chetna was pulled out unconscious and later declared dead at a local hospital.
The rescue operation, described as the most challenging in the state by Kotputli-Behror Collector Kalpana Agrawal, involved multiple techniques. Initial attempts to retrieve the girl using a rope and iron ring failed. A piling machine was eventually deployed to dig a parallel pit alongside the borewell, a process complicated by a tilt in the borewell shaft at a certain depth. The operation involved approximately 30 officials.
Chetna fell into the borewell on December 23rd while playing near her father’s farm. A post-mortem will determine the exact time of death. This tragic incident follows a similar case two weeks prior in Dausa district, where a five-year-old boy also perished after a prolonged borewell rescue. The incidents highlight the ongoing danger posed by unsecured borewells in the region.
