Tue Dec 31 16:13:02 UTC 2024: ## Gaza Faces Catastrophe as Israel’s War Enters Second Year: Genocide Accusations Mount

**Gaza City, January 1st, 2025** – The new year dawns in Gaza under the shadow of a devastating war, with escalating accusations of genocide against Israel. The ongoing conflict, which began in October 2023, has left a catastrophic mark on the enclave, claiming 46,376 lives and injuring over 51,925 in 2024 alone, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Israel’s siege tactics, including scorched earth bombardment and the systematic targeting of hospitals, shelters, aid workers, and journalists, have drawn widespread condemnation. Human rights groups and UN bodies allege these actions constitute genocide, citing the targeting of civilians and the deliberate creation of conditions designed to destroy a people “in whole or in part.” The Israeli army’s siege in northern Gaza has been described as “ethnic cleansing.”

The humanitarian crisis is deepening. Torrential rains have inundated makeshift tent villages, leading to a rise in hypothermia deaths. 34 hospitals are non-functional, 80 health centers are closed, and Israeli forces recently stormed and burned down a major hospital in northern Gaza. Families struggle to access food, water, and medicine.

Testimonies from Gazan residents paint a harrowing picture. Eman Shaghnoubi described the year as “more than torturous,” detailing her family’s struggle to survive the cold and relentless rain in their damaged tent. Shereen Abu Nida, whose husband was abducted by Israeli forces, is left to care for her four children alone. Musa Ali Muhammad al-Maghribi lamented the destruction and lack of hope for his nine sick children.

Despite the immense suffering, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shows no sign of halting the offensive. Mediation efforts have failed, with accusations that Netanyahu is exploiting the conflict to deflect from his corruption trial and the criticisms surrounding his handling of the October 2023 Hamas attack. The international community’s response has been widely criticized as inadequate, with the US’s unwavering support for Israel hindering diplomatic efforts and suppressing reports of potential famine in northern Gaza.

The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to prevent any act of genocide, while the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif. Adding to the crisis, Israel’s decision to ban UNRWA, a vital aid agency for Gaza, is set to further exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe. The UN General Assembly has repeatedly called for a ceasefire, but to no avail. As 2025 begins, the people of Gaza face an uncertain future, clinging to the hope for an end to the violence and the restoration of their lives.
