Wed Jan 01 03:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Five Charged in Death of One Direction Star Liam Payne

**Buenos Aires, Argentina** – Five individuals face charges in connection with the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne, who died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in October. Argentine prosecutors announced the charges on Monday.

Payne, 31, was found dead after falling from his hotel room at the Casa Sur Hotel. Toxicology reports revealed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system. Judge Laura Bruniard concluded that Payne’s intoxication led him to mistakenly believe the balcony was an exit, resulting in his fatal fall.

The prosecutor’s office charged Payne’s representative, the hotel manager, and the head of reception with manslaughter, carrying a potential sentence of up to five years in prison. The judge’s statement indicated that the representative left the hotel knowing Payne was in a vulnerable state, failing in their duty of care. The hotel manager is accused of allowing Payne, who was visibly intoxicated, to be taken to a room with a balcony, while the receptionist allegedly facilitated his transfer. The judge determined that while their actions contributed to Payne’s death, they were not premeditated.

Additionally, a hotel employee and a local waiter face charges of supplying Payne with cocaine. They are in pre-trial detention and face up to 15 years imprisonment if convicted.

Judge Bruniard’s findings are based on evidence from expert reports, witness testimonies, and hotel security footage. The footage allegedly shows Payne in a state of intoxication in the hotel lobby minutes before his death.

Payne’s death shocked fans and the music world. He achieved global fame as a member of One Direction, a massively successful boy band formed on the X Factor. His struggles with substance abuse and mental health had been previously publicized. The four remaining members of One Direction attended his funeral service in November.
