**MOSCOW** – In his New Year’s address to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin projected an image of confidence despite widespread economic anxieties and ongoing military setbacks in Ukraine. While offering no concrete solutions to soaring inflation (fueled by a 21% interest rate) or the protracted conflict, Putin emphasized the wellbeing of Russian citizens as his top priority.
He framed Russia’s current challenges within a historical context, referencing past triumphs, notably the country’s role in defeating Nazi Germany. Putin asserted that Russia had overcome numerous trials throughout the 21st century, strengthening its unity under his leadership. He expressed confidence in a positive future, stating, “We know for sure that the absolute value for us was, is and will be the fate of Russia, the well-being of its citizens.”
The address, broadcast across Russia’s eleven time zones, marked 25 years since Putin first addressed the nation as acting president. He lauded Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine as heroes, offering no details regarding battlefield conditions or prospects for peace, despite the incoming US presidency of Donald Trump who has promised a swift end to the war.
While Russian forces made significant gains in Ukraine in 2024, these advances came at a heavy, undisclosed cost in lives and equipment. Furthermore, a surprising Ukrainian counter-offensive in August resulted in the occupation of a part of Russia’s Kursk region – a situation Russia has yet to resolve despite reportedly deploying North Korean troops.
According to British security expert Ruth Deyermond, Russia’s continued slow advance in Ukraine while ignoring the occupation of its own territory undermines Putin’s claims of strength. Deyermond also pointed to the fall of Russia’s key Middle Eastern ally, Bashar al-Assad, and its increasing reliance on China as further indicators of weakened global influence. In a recent statement, Putin admitted he should have initiated the invasion of Ukraine earlier.
