Tue Dec 31 16:50:32 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Book Fair Celebrates 48 Years of Literary Success

**Chennai, India** – The 48th Chennai Book Fair, currently underway at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam, is celebrating almost five decades of promoting reading and publishing in South India. Starting humbly in 1977 with just 22 stalls in a school hall, the fair, the brainchild of K.V. Mathew of B.I. Publications, has grown into a massive event attracting thousands of book lovers from across India and internationally. This year’s fair features over 900 stalls showcasing a wide range of genres, and runs until January 12th, 2025.

The fair’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. A devastating fire in 1993 destroyed numerous stalls and books, and the 2015 Chennai floods caused significant damage to publisher inventories. Despite these setbacks, the fair persevered, bolstered by the consistent support of successive state governments and a growing appreciation for reading amongst the public.

Initially dominated by English publishers, the fair has seen a remarkable surge in Tamil language publications over the past two decades. This growth reflects not only the increased popularity of Tamil literature but also a shift in reading habits, with demand expanding beyond niche genres like cookbooks to encompass a diverse range of topics. Publishers have also adapted by releasing smaller, more affordable books.

The Chennai Book Fair has become more than just a commercial event; it’s a cultural festival and a vital platform for fostering social consciousness, said Tamil scholar I.S. Parveen Sultana. Its enduring success is a testament to the power of books and the dedication of publishers, booksellers, and the countless individuals who have contributed to its growth over the years.
