Wed Jan 01 13:30:00 UTC 2025: ## New Orleans New Year’s Attack: 10 Dead, 30 Injured in Intentional Car Rampage

**New Orleans, LA** – A horrific incident unfolded in New Orleans’ French Quarter early New Year’s Day, leaving 10 people dead and at least 30 injured after a pickup truck plowed into a crowd of revelers. The driver, who is deceased, reportedly fired upon the crowd and exchanged gunfire with police before being killed.

The incident occurred around 3:15 am at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets, an area bustling with New Year’s Eve celebrations. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated the driver acted intentionally, aiming to inflict maximum casualties. “This man… he fired on our officers from his vehicle… He was hell-bent on creating the carnage,” she said. Two police officers were also shot but are reported to be in stable condition.

Witnesses described a white truck breaching a barricade at high speed before the driver opened fire. Nicole Mowrer, an eyewitness, recounted hearing gunfire and seeing injured people in the aftermath. The FBI has taken operational control of the investigation and has reportedly discovered a suspected explosive device at the scene.

While authorities are not classifying the incident as terrorism at this time, the intentional nature of the attack and the discovery of the suspected explosive device are key aspects of the ongoing investigation. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry described the event as a “horrific act of violence.”

The French Quarter, a popular tourist destination, was packed with people celebrating the New Year when the attack occurred. The incident comes just days after a similar car-ramming attack in Germany resulted in five deaths and over 200 injuries. The timing of this tragedy is particularly jarring, as New Orleans was preparing for the Sugar Bowl football game. Despite increased police presence for the New Year’s celebrations, this incident underscores the unpredictable nature of such attacks. The investigation is ongoing.
