Mon Dec 30 03:06:13 UTC 2024: ## Indian Chess Dominates: Humpy Wins Women’s Rapid World Championship, Adding to Nation’s Triumphant Year

**New York/Singapore** – India continued its phenomenal year in chess with Grandmaster Koneru Humpy securing the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship title in New York on Sunday. Humpy, who previously won the title in 2019, defeated Irene Sukandar of Indonesia in the final round to claim victory with 8.5 points, securing her second world championship and becoming only the second player after China’s Ju Wenjun to achieve this feat.

Humpy’s win follows a string of remarkable achievements for Indian chess. In a recent World Championship in Singapore, D Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren in the classical format. Furthermore, India won its first-ever gold medals in both the Open and Women’s categories at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September. Humpy expressed her joy, stating that this is a “golden era for Indian chess” and hopes it will inspire young players.

Meanwhile, in the Open section of the Rapid World Championship, 18-year-old Russian Grandmaster Volodar Murzin emerged victorious with 10 points, edging out a field of star players including India’s R Praggnanandhaa, who ultimately finished with 8.5 points. Alexander Grischuk and Ian Nepomniachtchi, both from Russia, took second and third place respectively. India’s Arjun Erigaisi scored 9 points, tying for fourth place.
