**Kochi, Kerala:** MLA Uma Thomas is in critical condition after a fall at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. The incident occurred during a dance event on Saturday evening. She fell from the VIP gallery, suffering serious head injuries, a fractured rib cage, lung injuries, and spinal and chest trauma.
Hospital authorities at Renai Medicity confirmed that Thomas is currently on a ventilator and under 24-hour observation. Her condition is described as serious, and she remains unconscious. While immediate surgery wasn’t required, doctors are focusing on the head and lung injuries. A medical board will meet to decide on further treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that Thomas fell onto the concrete floor after apparently losing her balance while attempting to sit. Preliminary reports suggest the fall might have been caused by a temporary, insufficiently secure barricade in the VIP gallery. Concerns have been raised about the lack of safety guards and the use of temporary ribbon barriers as safety measures at the event.
The incident took place during a dance event aiming for a Guinness World Record, organized by Mridangam Vision. Minister Saji Cherian inaugurated the event, attended by around 12,000 people. Following the accident, Minister Cherian, Congress leaders, Thomas’s family, staff, ADGP S. Sreejith, and the District Collector visited the hospital.
The MLA’s official Facebook page has also shared updates on her condition. The incident is under investigation.
