**DETROIT, MI** – The Detroit Red Wings have fired head coach Derek Lalonde and replaced him with Todd McLellan, the team announced Thursday. The move comes as the Red Wings struggle, currently sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 13-17-4 record.
McLellan, 57, returns to Detroit after previously serving as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock during the team’s 2008 Stanley Cup-winning season. He brings extensive head coaching experience from stints with the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, and Los Angeles Kings, compiling a career record of 598-412-134 and nine playoff appearances. He has signed a multi-year contract with the Red Wings.
Lalonde, who held the position for nearly three seasons, was let go along with assistant coach Bob Boughner. Trent Yawney has been hired to fill a coaching role on McLellan’s new staff.
The Red Wings’ decision marks the fourth coaching change in the NHL this season. Despite significant off-season moves, including the acquisition of Patrick Kane, the team has yet to achieve the level of success expected in “Hockeytown,” facing a potential ninth consecutive season without a playoff berth. McLellan’s first game behind the bench will be Friday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
