**Kyiv, Ukraine** – Intense fighting raged across the Ukrainian frontlines over the Christmas holiday, with Russia launching a major offensive while Ukraine reported significant losses inflicted on invading North Korean troops. While Ukrainian ground forces successfully repelled numerous assaults, the country’s air defenses remained vulnerable to sustained Russian missile and drone attacks.
Ukrainian and South Korean officials reported that over 1,100 North Korean soldiers deployed to the Kursk region have been killed or wounded. This follows an earlier claim by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the figure exceeded 3,000. The North Koreans, reportedly ill-equipped and untrained to counter Ukrainian drones, suffered heavy casualties, with one incident showing a soldier accidentally killing a comrade while attempting to shoot down a drone.
Despite the reported successes in Kursk, the eastern region of Donetsk witnessed fierce battles, particularly around the strategically important town of Pokrovsk, a vital transportation hub. Russia launched over 400 assaults on Ukrainian positions on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, resulting in the reported capture of the western part of Kurakhove and ongoing fighting for the Central Mine in Toretsk. Ukrainian sources reported that Russian forces are sustaining heavy losses, losing a mechanized battalion per week and a brigade per month in some areas.
Russia, meanwhile, demonstrated its air superiority with a massive Christmas Day air attack involving 78 missiles and 106 Shahed drones, many of which targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. While Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted a significant number of these weapons, numerous strikes still hit power facilities, causing further disruptions. This followed a previous attack on Kyiv involving ballistic missiles.
Amidst the intense fighting, both sides engaged in attacks on each other’s infrastructure. Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR) claimed responsibility for several attacks on Russian military and energy facilities, including the destruction of a military transport plane, an oil refinery, and a warehouse storing components for Shahed drones. Ukraine also reported striking a factory producing fuel for Russian ballistic missiles.
The conflict has accelerated the development of drone technology on both sides. Ukraine highlighted successful ground operations using exclusively robotic systems, while Russia deployed new fiber-optic guided drones that pose a significant challenge to Ukrainian defenses. Ukraine is responding by developing its own countermeasures and continues to request advanced air defense systems from its NATO allies. Germany recently announced a substantial new aid package including Patriot and IRIS-T air defense systems.
Despite the ongoing heavy fighting and losses, both Putin and Zelenskyy remain defiant, with Putin claiming territorial gains and Zelenskyy vowing to continue striking Russian military targets. Analysts suggest the war’s outcome may hinge not only on battlefield gains but also on economic and political factors, potentially influenced by the outcome of the recent US presidential election.
