**Chennai, India** – Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai’s self-flagellation protest against the alleged rape of an Anna University student has sparked controversy. Annamalai lashed himself six times with a whip on Friday, vowing to remain shoeless until the DMK government is ousted. He cited the government’s alleged inaction in the case and the police’s alleged leak of the victim’s identity as reasons for his protest.
Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra defended Annamalai’s actions, describing the self-whipping as a symbolic demonstration of faith and a plea for justice. Vijayendra condemned criticism of the protest, calling it a “unique and heartfelt” method aimed at securing justice for the victim. He emphasized the BJP’s commitment to women’s rights and its opposition to the DMK government.
Annamalai further accused the accused, Gnanashekaran, of having connections to the DMK and criticized the police for not including him on a list of known rowdies despite his alleged criminal history. The BJP leader plans to visit six Muruga temples as part of his protest. He has also pledged to remain barefoot until the DMK is removed from power in Tamil Nadu.
