NEW DELHI, December 28, 2024 – Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s former students have fondly remembered him as a remarkably humble and soft-spoken professor, a stark contrast to the image often associated with political figures. Several individuals who studied under Dr. Singh at Panjab University and the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) shared anecdotes highlighting his gentle demeanor and exceptional teaching abilities.

Sudipto Mundle, Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Centre for Development Studies and a former student of Dr. Singh at DSE, described him as so soft-spoken that students struggled to hear him in small classes. Gita Sen, Professor Emeritus at the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru, echoed these sentiments, recalling his kindness and gentle nature, noting his humility despite his extensive knowledge. She added that his students never anticipated his future political career.

H.S. Shergill, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Economics, Panjab University, recounted how Dr. Singh offered him the opportunity to pursue a PhD under his supervision but was unable to accept due to another commitment. Mr. Shergill also noted the aura of honesty surrounding Dr. Singh, even as one of the youngest professors.

Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, shared his own memories of Dr. Singh’s teaching at the DSE, emphasizing his ability to make complex topics in international trade easily understandable to students. Dr. Mishra also described him as unassuming and low-profile. These recollections paint a picture of a man who remained true to his humble nature throughout his career, both in academia and politics.
