Fri Dec 27 23:52:30 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Flooded by Overnight Rainfall, Traffic Chaos Ensues Amidst Orange Weather Warning

**New Delhi, India –** Delhi awoke Friday morning to widespread flooding and significant traffic disruptions following heavy overnight rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange warning, urging residents to prepare for continued downpours.

The rain, which began around 2:30 am, led to substantial waterlogging in several areas, notably Burari, where traffic congestion is reported. Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 9.1 mm of rainfall by 11:30 am, while other areas saw similar levels. The IMD attributes the downpour to an active western disturbance interacting with easterly winds.

Despite the rainfall, the minimum temperature was a relatively mild 11°C (2.8°C above normal). However, air quality remains a concern, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 372 (‘very poor’) at 9 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). While the government recently revoked the most stringent air quality measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), less severe actions remain in place to mitigate further deterioration. The city grapples with the dual challenge of managing both the aftermath of the storm and persistent air pollution.
