Fri Dec 27 08:25:57 UTC 2024: ## “Squid Game” Season 2 Ends on Brutal Cliffhanger, Sets Stage for Season 3
**SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA** – Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game” concluded its second season with a shocking twist that leaves protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) devastated and sets the stage for a dramatic third season. The finale saw the brutal murder of Gi-hun’s best friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), at the hands of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). The reveal that the Front Man is In-ho, a previous Squid Game winner, adds another layer of betrayal to the already heartbreaking scene. In-ho, posing as Player 001, manipulated Gi-hun and Jung-bae, only to ultimately betray their trust and kill Jung-bae.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke to Variety about the season’s conclusion, explaining that Gi-hun’s repeated attempts to stop the game – recruiting mercenaries, attempting a player vote, and leading a rebellion – all failed, culminating in the devastating loss of his friend. This loss, says Dong-hyuk, provides a crucial turning point for Gi-hun, setting the tone for Season 3.
“All of his failures lead to this heavy, heavy crisis of having to lose his very best friend,” Dong-hyuk stated. “How is Gi-hun going to carry on his mission? That’s the story that’ll further unfold.”
Dong-hyuk hinted at the direction of Season 3, teasing that Gi-hun will be a changed man, grappling with guilt and failure. A post-credits scene featuring new versions of the deadly “Red Light, Green Light” dolls further suggests a shift in the game’s dynamics. While a specific release date isn’t confirmed, Dong-hyuk anticipates a Season 3 launch sometime in summer or fall of next year. He also highlighted the pentathlon game as a personal favorite from Season 2, praising its complexity and showcase of traditional Korean children’s games.
The creator concluded by promising an even more intense and expanded storyline for the upcoming season, urging viewers to stick around for the ultimate conclusion.
