Fri Dec 27 11:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Babar Azam Joins Bail-Switching Trend in Centurion Test

**Centurion, South Africa:** Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam added his name to the growing list of cricketers adopting the quirky ritual of switching bails during the ongoing first Test against South Africa. Following in the footsteps of players like Stuart Broad and Mohammed Siraj, Azam engaged in the superstitious act on Day 2 of the match at SuperSport Park.

While South Africa dominated the opening two days, with Dane Paterson taking five wickets and debutant Corbin Bosch claiming four, Azam’s bail-switching attempt provided a brief moment of levity for the struggling Pakistani team. Although the maneuver didn’t immediately result in a wicket, it reflects a lighthearted trend gaining popularity in Test cricket.

The practice, initially popularized by England’s Stuart Broad, involves flipping the bails in an attempt to influence the game’s momentum or break a partnership. Recently, India’s Mohammed Siraj also employed the tactic during the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Despite Azam’s playful attempt and a fighting 51 from Kamran Ghulam, Pakistan’s batting lineup struggled, posting a modest first-innings total of 211. South Africa, spearheaded by Aiden Markram’s half-century, easily surpassed this total. While the effectiveness of bail-switching remains debatable, the trend highlights the human element within the intense competition of Test cricket.
