Thu Dec 26 16:32:08 UTC 2024: ## Lavrov Rejects Weak Ukraine Ceasefire, Seeks Legally Binding Peace Deal

**Moscow, December 26, 2024** – Russia has dismissed the idea of a weak ceasefire in Ukraine, insisting on a legally binding peace agreement that guarantees the security of both Russia and its neighbors, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated today. Lavrov characterized a simple truce as a futile endeavor, expressing concerns that the West would exploit such a situation to re-arm Ukraine.

Instead, Russia seeks comprehensive legal agreements that definitively address security concerns. These documents, Lavrov emphasized, must be drafted to prevent future violations.

These comments follow President Vladimir Putin’s recent statements indicating openness to ceasefire discussions with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, but with the caveat of no major territorial concessions and Kyiv abandoning its NATO aspirations. Putin maintains that while the situation is complex, Russia is progressing towards its objectives in the ongoing conflict.

Meanwhile, President-elect Trump’s envoy, Retired Lieutenant-General Keith Kellogg, is scheduled to visit Kyiv and other European capitals in early January to facilitate a swift resolution to the conflict. Lavrov expressed hope for Trump administration involvement and affirmed Russia’s readiness for consultations.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s 2022 invasion, stems from Russia’s perception of Western encroachment on its post-Soviet interests, particularly concerning Ukraine’s potential NATO membership. Ukraine, however, asserts its right to seek NATO membership, a position that Russia firmly opposes, deeming it an insurmountable obstacle to any peace agreement. The West, conversely, views Russia’s actions as an imperialistic land grab.
