Thu Dec 26 17:17:21 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Military Courts Sentence 60 More to Prison for May 9 Attacks

**Islamabad, December 26, 2024** – Pakistan’s military has announced the sentencing of 60 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to ten years for their involvement in attacks on military installations during violent protests on May 9, 2023. The convictions, announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), follow a similar announcement last week of 25 convictions.

The May 9th protests, sparked by the arrest of Imran Khan, saw supporters of the former Prime Minister attack several military facilities, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad. Hundreds were arrested, with at least 103 handed over to military authorities for trial.

Among the newly convicted is Hassan Khan Niazi, Imran Khan’s nephew, who received a ten-year sentence for his role in the attack on the Lahore Corps commander’s residence. The army stated that this concludes the trials of May 9th accused under military custody. All convicts retain the right to appeal.

The announcement comes after a delay caused by Supreme Court petitions challenging the military trials of civilians. While final adjudication on these petitions is pending, the Supreme Court permitted the army to proceed with verdicts in completed cases. The army emphasized its commitment to upholding justice and maintaining the rule of law.
