**Mysuru, Karnataka, December 27, 2024** – A newly completed memorial to renowned Kannada actor Dr. Vishnuvardhan in Mysuru has won the prestigious Kohler Bold Design Award in the Public Institution category. Designed by architects Nischal Abaykumar and Jesal Pathak of M9 Design Studio, the memorial is more than a tribute; it’s a vibrant community space built on the principles of inclusivity and accessibility.

Situated on a 5-acre site, the memorial utilizes only 2.5 acres, leaving the remaining land for future development. The design features a circular structure centered around an altar containing the actor’s ashes. The circular outer wall, made of exposed concrete, showcases Dr. Vishnuvardhan’s life through photos, videos, and quotes from his films. Natural light filters through a continuous vent, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow.

Strategically placed openings in the circular wall lead to a central courtyard with a water body, providing a space for quiet reflection. A life-size sculpture of the actor’s signature bangle sits in the center of the water feature, a poignant reminder of his presence. The memorial also includes a state-of-the-art 240-seat auditorium, classrooms for government school children (who have free access), a café, and a small amphitheater. The auditorium and adjacent spaces are designed to serve as a social equalizer, reflecting Dr. Vishnuvardhan’s commitment to the underprivileged.

The architects incorporated a green roof, inspired by the surrounding paddy fields, to provide natural cooling and eventually conceal the concrete structure. A semi-circular brick jaali wall adds a vibrant contrast to the concrete, creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional separation between the auditorium and the altar.

The memorial’s design reflects a thoughtful blend of functionality and artistry, creating a space that honors Dr. Vishnuvardhan’s legacy while also serving the community. The Kohler Bold Design Award recognizes this achievement, highlighting the project’s success in blending architectural innovation with social responsibility.
