**Bengaluru, Karnataka –** The state of Karnataka is observing seven days of mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday, December 26th, 2024. Friday, December 27th, has been declared a public holiday, including for schools and colleges.
The announcement came as the state was preparing for the second day of celebrations marking the centenary of the Belgaum Congress session. However, KPCC president and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar cancelled the planned public rally in Belagavi, replacing it with a condolence meeting.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his profound sorrow, recalling Mr. Singh’s instrumental role in his first term as Chief Minister and highlighting the impact of UPA policies on Karnataka’s development. He lauded Mr. Singh’s statesmanship and vision. Mr. Siddaramaiah, along with Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar, is travelling to Delhi to pay their respects. Shivakumar described Mr. Singh’s passing as the end of an era defined by integrity and quiet strength.
Political leaders across party lines have offered condolences. The BJP has cancelled a planned protest in Bengaluru. AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge also departed for Delhi.
